Girls Allowed Legacy 2014-2016

Culture For All

As part of Derry-Londonderry City of Culture 2013, we facilitated Girls Allowed. Hosted by St Cecilia's College and funded by the Big Lottery's Culture For All,  we launched Girls Allowed on International Women's Day 2013. 40 girls from St Cecilia's and Lisnagelvin Primary School participated in a series of songwriting and performance with music technology workshops. Workshop delivery was centred on positive female role models in music, using workshop activities as tools of solidarity, participation and communication. Due to its high profile on social media the project was featured on the BBC's Across The Line programme during the Radio One Big Weekend.

Building a Legacy

After the incredible success of Girls Allowed, we had requests to build on its legacy by delivering a multi-disciplined citywide project. In order to create a legacy in the lives of participants, we believed that it was essential for our participants to learn practical skills while addressing commonly overlooked issues surrounding an individual's personal development. Therefore we followed our own innovative dual diagnostic model; in tandem with our OCN Accredited Creative Industry courses, we delivered accredited units under the heading of Personal Success & Well Being.

Funded by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and Derry & Strabane District Council, Girls Allowed Legacy featured over 100 girls, aged 14 to 17, from three Girls Colleges in Derry-Londonderry. St Cecilia's College recorded and produced two podcasts; one of which was broadcast on International Women's Day. Thornhill wrote and recorded a three track E.P as well as filming a music video for one of their tracks. St Mary's made their own music video for one of the other Thornhill tracks, and they also organised a final event for all three schools where all participants got to share in the Girls Allowed Legacy experience!

Over 200 certificates have been awarded in Creative Industry and Personal Success & Well Being units:

  • Podcast Production
  • Music Making
  • Video Production
  • Event Management
  • Personal Motivation
  • Stress Management
